History of a bastide

The Clinic was founded in 1965 on an 18th century farm owned by distinguished harvesters in the Fayence countryside. The idea, which was ground-breaking at the time, was to provide those who were suffering with the exceptional natural resources from the site. Located in the Varois back-country, protected from the wind and in an extremely tranquil region at the edge of the medieval village of Callian, the site benefits from ample sunshine and a very mild climate, making it possible to provide year-round care in the great outdoors. The five-hectare estate, located near Lac de Saint-Cassien, offers orchards and vegetable gardens from May to September and total immersion in an incredible natural setting..

Upon opening, the then 20-room site was certified as a convalescent home. As a measure of its success, it would undergo several expansions in 1966, 1969, 1971 and again in 1979 to reach a capacity of 72 rooms.

Total immersion in an incredible natural setting

On April 1979 the 5th, the Clinic became the first place to propose a program for cardiovascular rehabilitation. It was the first time in France that such a rehabilitation was granted by an institution outside the hospitality places. The accomodation is named after farms around and the specific place on which it is built, "La Chenevière". It has become a pioneer institution in the cardiovascular rehabilitation, and is now standing as an example for many other institutions, as its rich research work is spreading among various medical publications, in France as well as worldwide.

An ORPEA Group facility

In 2008, the Clinic joined the ORPEA group and its subsidiary, CLINEA. The ORPEA-CLINEA Group is a major actor, both in France and internationally, in general psychiatry and child or youth psychiatry.

ORPEA is at the centre of a French group of private retirement homes, founded in 1989 by its president, Doctor Jean-Claude Marian. A specialist in long-term care for dependent elderly persons, he went on to develop homes for the elderly as well as home help services. On 30 March 2001, the Group launched its subsidiary dedicated to its clinics: CLINEA. Today, CLINEA provides comprehensive care through its follow-on care, rehabilitation and psychiatric clinics..

The ORPEA Group has grown significantly since it began, with 346 facilities across France today. ORPEA has also expanded its geographical horizons and now operates in 11 European countries, in China and Brazil, with a network of more than 854 facilities and 86,657 beds (data from September 2018).

A new era for La Bastide

The natural resources on the La Chènevière site are perfectly suited for the needs of people suffering from psychological problems and in need of some support.

Having become somewhat dilapidated, the building was soon due for a full renovation. A new cardiology centre was built in Saint-Raphaël and, in 2017, the La Chenevière Clinic was transferred there. The fully renovated and redesigned Callian site accommodated 80 beds for psychiatric care.

On 19 March 2018, the La Bastide de Callian care centre was opened just 20 minutes from Cannes, 30 minutes from Nice and 45 from Monaco. With direct access from A8 number 5 exit, it is also equipped with a helipad and vehicles for transfers to the airport.

The unique architecture is magnified
